(CMR) The UK National Crime Agency and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation are working with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) to find out who was behind a recent cyberattack on the Cayman Government.
Deloitte has also been engaged to perform an independent review and assessment of the “security event.”
Initially, the Government did not confirm or deny the attack; however, in a release issued on Friday, it revealed an investigation is ongoing.
According to the release, there had been no successful compromise to any Cayman Islands Government systems, but the Government is not yet aware of who was behind the attack.
“The Government’s Cyber Security Office, in conjunction with the Computer Services Department, Department of eGovernment, and other regulatory authorities, continually monitor and combat cyber threats to protect our systems and services. A recent, thwarted cyber-attack serves as a reminder of the ongoing international threats and the Government’s work to avert them,” the release stated.
The Ombudsman was formally advised of the attack attempt, although it was unsuccessful. In the event of an actual data breach, the Government has a legal obligation to inform the Ombudsman and affected parties.
The public and business communities are urged to remain vigilant with the increased cyber threat activity regionally at this time.
