(CMR) It was revealed on The Cold Hard Truth on Friday that the Cayman Islands Government Computer Services Department experienced a security breach of their system recently.
A Russian hacker reportedly gained access to the department's computer system; however, it is unclear how damaging this data breach may be and if anyone's information may have been compromised.
This is concerning for the people of the Cayman Islands as the Government is on the verge of introducing the national identification system, and the use of the Government's E-services is continuously promoted. Government has not informed the public of this breach.
Despite having Pamela Greene on board as a chief information security officer, the Government has now outsourced the investigation and resolution to this breach to an overseas consultant who arrived on the island on Monday.
CMR understands that this consultant is a professional ethical hacker who is believed to provide third-party services via Deloitte.
CMR has attempted to find out further details about the breach but has so far been unsuccessful in doing so. A query has been made with the RCIPS to determine if there has been a criminal complaint on the issue; however, a response was not received at the time of this publication.
The Computer Services Department is headed by director Darvy Whittaker and falls under the remit of Deputy Premier Andre Ebanks. As the central IT department of the CIG, the department provides IT security, service delivery, and technology solutions that ensure adequate tools and resources to carry out the government’s digital and technological objectives. It offers vital technological support services which create the foundation on which the Civil Service runs.
Not only does the department hold information on the public, but with the Government, the country's biggest employer, the department has access to all personnel files.
