(CMR) Organizers of the Addison Kelly Butterfly 5K have announced that a mental health first aid training program will be rolled out in honor of Addison to ensure that as many people as possible can support people who are struggling with their mental health in the Cayman Islands.
The announcement was made following the recent Addison Kelly Butterfly 5K. Hundreds of people participated in the second annual Addison Kelly Butterfly 5K last month, a major fundraiser for the Addison Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Addison Kelly Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Caymanian teenager Addison ‘Addi’ Kelly, who lost her life to suicide on 8 February 2022 at the age of 16. Her family established the fund to help increase the mental health support services and resources that are available on island and put more qualified Caymanians in the field. The scholarship is administered through the Alex Panton Foundation, which also plays a significant role in mental health in the Cayman Islands.
“We continue her fight to stop the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and share her story with others in an effort to spread and increase awareness. Our aim is to bring hope to anyone who may be going through something similar and provide guidance for the people around them,” the event organizers said in a social media post.
