(CMR) A reward of $250,000 is being offered for the successful arrest of the person who opened fire at a group of people at a football game at the Ed Bush field on Sunday, leaving seven injured and multiple others traumatized.
According to police, there were 200 to 300 people at the game when the incident occurred. Some 20 to 25 persons were watching the match from the far east corner of the facility when it is theorized a single shooter came across an open pasture and opened fire on that group.
Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton said multiple spent shell casings were recovered from the open pasture.
At least two of those who were shot were believed to be the intended target of the shooting. Four of the seven people who were shot have since been discharged from hospital.
Meantime, Premier Hon Julianna O'Connor-Connolly said the Government is prepared to support the police if they need to bring a task force into the island. However, Commissioner Walton said at this time, he has full confidence in his team, so a task force will not be brought in at this time.
He said additional resources were being deployed with armed patrol in hotspots.
O'Connor-Connolly also said the Government would support a gun amnesty. According to the Commissioner, there are 89 known guns in circulation in the Cayman Islands that were previously used to commit crimes but have not been recovered by police.
The Commissioner also said the police were aware of four known gangs, two in West Bay, two in George Town, and three merged against one in West Bay. the merger was about 40 people.
Her Excellency Governor Jane Owen was among those calling for those with information to tell the police what they knew. She said the National Security Council would meet on Tuesday to discuss this shooting.
Following the shooting at the Ed Bush Field, the Cayman Islands Football Association has suspended all football games until a meeting is held with the police.
