(CMR) Caymanian Robert Thompson Jr. was named the 84th Mr. America over the weekend, winning yet another major competition. He is the first non-American to win the competition, beating top contenders from all across the US.
Thompson, who started weightlifting in 2015 to address his weight and health, started competing in 2018 and has been on top in a number of competitions since then.
“I want to personally offer my sincere congratulations to Mr. Thompson on his accomplishment. He should be celebrated for his hard work and dedication to the sport he loves,” commented Hon. Kenneth Bryan, Minister for Tourism & Ports, whose Ministry organized a welcome party at the airport for Thompson on Monday.
“As a result of this prestigious victory, Mr. Thompson has joined the ranks of elite Caymanian athletes who, through new audiences, raise the profile of the Cayman Islands and the talent that exists here,” he added.
The Mr. America Sports Festival & Expo was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on 6-8 October.
