(CMR) Luisto Eusebio Hernandez (28), who shot his father-in-law twice following an argument about how to feed his young child a mango, was sentenced to 21 years for attempted murder on Tuesday, 11 July. He was also sentenced to 12 years for illegal possession of a firearm.
The sentences will run concurrently, which means Hernandez, who was convicted by a jury last month, will serve 21 years for the offenses.
The court heard that Hernandez was at a residence off Oakland Drive, George Town, where his father-in-law lived when they had an argument last April. Hernandez was reportedly feeding his young daughter a mango when his father-in-law told him the pieces were too big for the child. An argument then followed, with Hernandez threatening to kill his father-in-law.
His father-in-law then threw a bottle which shattered and injured Hernandez's young daughter. Hernandez reportedly left the George Town residence and returned later with a gun. He shot his father-in-law twice.
The man was seriously injured but survived the ordeal. Hernandez was on the run for some time before he was arrested, along with a woman who was charged with harboring him.
Justice Roger Chapple, in handing down the sentence, said while there was some provocation, Hernandez left the scene and returned with the gun, which suggested premeditation. He also said the illegal gun was never retrieved and was connected to other serious crimes, including the murder of a former prison officer.
The judge also took into consideration that Hernandez had four previous convictions.
