(CMR) Rudy Ebanks, former chairman of the Board of Directors for Utility Regulation and Competition (OfReg), has died after being ill for some time.
Ebanks, a 36-year veteran and former Vice-President of Regulatory and Carrier Relations at Cable & Wireless (Cayman Islands) Ltd., was appointed chairman of OfReg in 2021. He also served on the OfReg Board as a non-Executive Director.
Last month it was announced that Ebanks stepped down from his role as chairman of OfReg for personal reasons.
He has worked in various capacities over the years, including engineering, sales, customer service, project and program management, national and international carrier relations, and regulatory and senior management.
Ebanks was responsible for leading a team of experts in the negotiations for the liberalization of the Cayman Islands telecommunications market.
Last month OfReg board member Frank Balderamos, who spoke of Ebanks’s dedication to the organization, said “Throughout his time on the Board, Rudy’s unwavering spirit and positive attitude inspired the Board daily as we carried out the important work of OfReg.”
“Rudy was committed to protecting Cayman’s critical national infrastructure assets and ensuring the well-being of consumers. He also took on the role of mentor to the board members and senior staff and was always willing to teach and pass on some of the wisdom he gained from a lifetime of deep experience in the ICT sector and service to the Cayman Islands. We thank him for his invaluable service and wish him well for the future,” he added.
