(CMR) Police have confirmed that yet another visitor to the Cayman Islands, a 55-year-old man from New Zealand, has died while out snorkeling.
Reports from the RCIPS are that at around 7:15 PM, Wednesday, 1 May, officers and other emergency services were dispatched by the 911 communication center to a resort in the vicinity of Governors Beach, West Bay Road, regarding a report of an unresponsive male on the beach in front of the resort.
According to the report, the man was snorkeling with his family when he decided to return to shore on his own. The other family members continued snorkeling, and when they returned to shore later, they could not locate the man. It was soon discovered that the man was still in the ocean, and when they reached him, they discovered that he was unresponsive. He was assisted back to shore by persons present, and CPR was administered until EMS personnel attended and took over.
The man was transported to the George Town Hospital by ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased by the attending doctor.
Inquiries into the circumstances of the death are currently ongoing but are not believed to be suspicious at this time. The RCIPS offered condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Just over two weeks ago, a 72-year-old man from the US died while out snorkeling. In March, another visitor was pronounced dead following a water-related death. LAst year the Cayman Islands recorded several water-related deaths of both visitors and locals.
