(CMR) Four masked men armed with a hammer attempted a brazen daytime robbery Tuesday morning shortly before 10:00 am on the waterfront. The busy area was already bustling with tourists and other businesses opening up in the vicinity.
Reports are that around 9:52 am, four masked men entered the International Diamond Center on South Church Street and mashed several glass countertops to steal jewelry from the display cases. The incident led to the deployment of the helicopter, fire trucks, and armed police units.
Police officers soon arrived to process the scene. There is no indication at this time of what was taken in the robbery.
Business owners noted that the culprits appeared to be four Jamaican nationals dressed in construction gear. Three entered the store, and one served as the getaway driver. The getaway vehicle was subsequently dumped and has already been recovered by the police.
After 11:00 am, the sole employee was seen cleaning up the various cases that were smashed with a hammer. The jewelry store is located next to a dive shop and across from Hard Rock Cafe – both popular locations with visitors to the Cayman Islands.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more details are available.
