(CMR) The Cayman Islands Coast Guard's Operation Rescue Coordination Centre is coordinating a response to a disabled cargo ship, SC Montana, a Liberian-flagged freighter vessel.
The ship suffered engine failure and is drifting towards Little Cayman. A freighter vessel has been dispatched to assist and prevent a potential grounding. All crew on board SC Montana are safe.
The vessel Aruna is assisting to keep the Montana out to sea so it doesn’t run aground.
UPDATE: Efforts continued throughout the night to render assistance to the stricken cargo ship SC Montana and divert its course away from Little Cayman. The Liberian freighter vessel suffered engine failure late Tuesday evening and has been drifting towards the western end of the Island.
LEFKES, a bulk carrier vessel, joined the Aruna to assist in towing SC Montana to a safe location away from Little Cayman. Navigator, a tug vessel, has also been deployed from Grand Cayman.
Representatives of the Cayman Islands Coast Guard expressed gratitude to their counterparts and the crew on LEFKES for their continued assistance throughout the incident, noting that neither the docks on Little Cayman nor Cayman Brac have the infrastructure to handle the stricken vessel.
