CMR) Seven people were reportedly shot during half-time at a football game between Elite Sports Club and Academy Sports Club Sunday evening at the Ed Bush Field. A CMR source said about 12-15 rounds were fired toward the stands, sending the crowd scattering.
This is the first time in Cayman's history that there has been a mass shooting at a public event with children being present.
Five of the seven people were brought to the George Town Hospital by private vehicles and two by ambulance. They were said to have serious injuries but were in stable condition.
Members of the Elite SC team, some of whom are trained firefighters, assisted the victims before the arrival of emergency service personnel.
Several people have complained on social media about the response time of the ambulance; however, a CMR source explained that the police had to declare the scene safe before emergency service personnel could enter.
CMR has been told the shooting may have been linked to an ongoing feud between persons from George Town and West Bay.
Police have cordoned off the scene, and there is an increased police presence in the vicinity, including the Firearms Response Unit.
Police said the investigation into this incident is active and ongoing, and so far, there have been no arrests in connection with the incident.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and provide information. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 911 or the West Bay Police Station at 949-3999
