(CMR) The trial of two men charged in the murder of retired prison officer Harry Elliott began on Friday, 20 October, with jurors watching a short video which showed the gunman firing the shot that killed Elliot.
Elliott (63) was shot and killed as he was leaving a business establishment in George Town last April. Justin Kyle Jackson (25) and Eric Brian Williams-Soto (22) have both been charged with murder and possession of an illegal firearm.
The prosecution said Elliot was killed in a robbery gone “horribly wrong” as he was leaving an illegal gambling shop in George Town.
The video shows two men, one wearing a mask and the other without mask, at the establishment's door. The prosecution and defense agreed that the unmasked man in the video was Jackson.
Keron Cupid, a former police officer and the owner of the gambling shop, was the first witness to to take the stand. Cupid told the court that a buzzer system was used to allow persons to enter the business. The accused men had gained entry to his business as Elliott was leaving. Elliott was reportedly shot in the head.
Caine Thomas, who it was suspected was the getaway driver in the attempted robbery, has since died.
