(CMR) The Ministry of Education has decided to close all schools today, Tuesday, 6 February 2024, due to the adverse weather conditions. All residents are encouraged to take every necessary precaution, including exercising extreme caution on roadways.
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service and Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) are continuing to monitor a cold front that is affecting the Cayman Islands. A Marine Warning for all three Islands remains in effect, and the public is reminded to exercise extreme caution until further updates are provided.
Emergency response teams are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to assist as needed. The Red Cross shelter, located at 34 Huldah Avenue (across from the Farmers Market), is open, and residents are encouraged to visit www.redcross.org.ky for more information about their shelter.
The Government recommends that the public continue to refrain from engaging in any in-water activities on all three Islands, stay well back from the shoreline, and ensure that marine vessels remain in a safe harbor and secured until further notice.
The Department of District Administration said it is aware of road breaches and debris along the north coast of Cayman Brac, and has mobilized teams to address the clearing process. Motorists are asked to be cautious while driving today as inclement weather is expected to continue throughout the day.
In the meantime, Cayman Airways Limited (CAL) said it is monitoring the weather conditions in the Cayman Islands very closely as it relates to flight operations for today, February 6, 2024.
The Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) has issued a notice that the Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) on Grand Cayman and the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CYB) on Cayman Brac will suspend operations if wind gusts exceed 34 knots. Such closures would also impact flights to and from Little Cayman.
At this time, flights are operating as scheduled, but if the airports temporarily close this morning, affected CAL passengers traveling today will be notified as soon as possible and updated periodically via the email address provided at the time of booking as information becomes available with regard to flight delays.
