(CMR) Over 60 students from a Jamaica primary school who were rushed to hospital on Monday, 2 October, after they consumed sweets containing THC or cannabis are being monitored for psychological problems.
The Ocho Rios Primary student, ranging from six to 12 years old, purchased the candies from a an unknown male vendor outside their school. When students started vomiting and hallucinating, they were rushed to the St Ann's Bay Regional Hospital, where they were treated.
The students were not considered to be in serious condition; however, a few were monitored overnight.
Each Dimo packet had 10 “full throttle rainbow sour belts,” each containing 100 milligrams of THC, a dose which is considered strong for experienced adults. According to the Dimo Hemp site, a packet of the candies cost US$21.99. The price the children paid for them is not known.
According to information on the packet, it was allegedly produced in California, USA. However, authorities were unsure how it arrived in Jamaica as there was no permission for its importation.
Education Minister Faval Williams expressed shock on Monday at the situation which also left parents and educators alarmed.
“I am extremely, extremely alarmed at what I saw here this afternoon. To hear people say they’re drowsy and to actually see the children, they looked drugged out; it’s that dramatic,” Williams said.
On Tuesday, police were looking for a person of interest in the case.
