(CMR) Roatan's public hospital, which has served the people of Roatan for over 30 years, was completely destroyed by fire Friday night, April 19.
Amid the devastation, it has been revealed that two fire trucks donated by the Cayman Islands are not yet in use because of the exorbitant fees being charged by customs to have them released to Roatan.
Community members reportedly joined emergency services Friday night to try to put out the blaze at the hospital, but the fire managed to spread. The destruction of the only hospital serving hundreds has left the community devastated.
Allegations are that the fire may have started due to a short circuit in the pediatric ward; however, investigations are still ongoing.
Bay Islands Network reported that some of the 65 patients evacuated from the facility were being housed at a nearby gym.
On Saturday, medical personnel from Tegucigalpa arrive to provide care to those who need medical assistance.
