(CMR) Hundreds of people across the Cayman Islands have expressed sadness at the passing of veteran pilot and former Chief Pilot for Cayman Airways Express Captain Harrison Bothwell.
Captain Harrison served Cayman Airways as a pilot for over 40 years before retiring; however, he continued serving the community in various capacities after retirement.
Captain Harrison, who started flying for Cayman Airways in 1972, will always be remembered for his heroic landing of a plane that lost one of its engines after takeoff from Owen Roberts International Airport in 1973.
He flew all the planes Cayman Airways had in its fleet until his retirement in 2012, including DC-8s, DC-9s, BAC 1-11s, and Boeing 737s. Captain Bothwell was passionate about flying and only parted ways with doing what he loved because, by law, he was required to retire.
Captain Harrison Bothwell also served on the National Conservation Council (NCC).
Captain Harrison has been remembered for his kindness on the job, in the community, and with his family.
“I could not be more honored to call you my precious Stepfather. You brought my Mom and family so much love, kindness, and respect. There are no words for your absence. Your heart was so big. Everyone adored you for your kind and happy soul,” Summer Rose wrote on Facebook.
“One of the best Captains during my CAL tenure. I am blessed to have known you and flown with you as part of your cabin crew for so many years. A professional, kind, and caring Captain in so many ways,” Debbie Broderick wrote.
