(CMR): Sean Roy Scott (37) was found guilty yesterday for attempted abduction of a nine-year old visitor in May 2018.
On Thursday Justice Roger Chapple found him guilty of the attempting abduction that has shocked members of the Cayman Community. Details are that the child was outside in the vicinity of Plantation Village playing with her sister.
Scott a resident of West Bay but with ties to Cayman Brac denied trying to abduct the child who was here visiting with her family on May 13. At the time, she was playing with her six-year-old sister and grandfather nearby when Scott approached the girls asking if they wanted to play a game. They allege that Scott then tried to remove the older girl from the scene but she was able to wiggle herself away from him.
He was charged with criminal trespass and attempted abduction but pleaded not guilty in November.
The victim, her sister and grandfather did not give a particularly accurate description of Scott nor were they able to successfully pick him out of a photo identification lineup. They picked someone else’s photo. However, Scott’s own testimony and that of the girls placed him at the scene and mirrored closely to that of the girls.
His lawyer relied heavily on this point of mistaken identity during the trial. However, the judge found the parallels in the various testimonies too compelling along with the fact that this court issued electronic ankle monitor placed him at that exact location. Scott was already awaiting a jail sentence for several other offense including five burglaries – that were set to see him get a lengthy jail sentence.
After initially denying being in the area in a subsequent interview he admitted playing with two blond girls asking them if they wanted to play a game. This and his attire were also details the girls provided in their detailed police statements.
During subsequent statements to police Scott admitted to having been in the area that day after celebrating Mother’s Day at the beach and that he had spoken to two blond girls. However, he would not admit trying to abduct one of them but instead relied on a defense that it must have been someone else with another set of blond girls with eerily similar circumstances in the area.
He did not testify at his trial and the judge drew a negative inference from his lack of testimony. The judge did not believe that there was any other logical explanation except that Scott was the guilty party stating:
“Logic and common sense says this can’t be … there are many coincidences, too many. The evidence drives me to the conclusion that there was only one man and it was this defendant.”
Scott was remanded back into custody and social inquiry reports requested. He is due to be sentenced in May.
The local community was shocked last year by several attempted child abductions including one in the Mount Pleasant area of West Bay. That case remains unsolved and no arrests have been made.
