(CMR) Persons attending court in the Cayman Islands this year should expect to see uniformed officers at various points as there is now a formally established Court Protective Unit that operates under the RCIPS.
The unit comprises 14 auxiliary officers and a sergeant to be appointed later this year, Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands Margaret Ramsay-Hale announced on Wednesday during the 2023 Grand court opening.
“This means in 2023 court security will largely comprise uniformed auxiliary officers… not only is the existence of the auxiliary force welcomed, but the fact that they have that show of force- that they are in full uniform- that already wins half the security gain,” Chief Justice Ramsay-Hale said.
She said the officers are fully trained and will effect powers of arrest and maintain law and order within the courts. The Chief Justice said with nine open courts, security is important.
