(CMR) Senior Customs Officer, Crystal McField-Baldwin, who was suspended from her post at the Cayman Islands Customs Department in October last year; has now been fired by the Collector of Customs, Mr. Charles Clifford.
The Customs Department issued a statement earlier today confirming the termination but provided few precise details. However, they did confirm that she was fired for gross misconduct. Clifford confirms that the she was fired as a result of an incident that occurred on September 22, 2017.
Independent CMR sources have informed us that apparently a member of the public lodged a complaint against her and she allegedly became verbally combative and acted in a manner unbecoming of her post and that ultimately led to the decision to terminate her employed.
The businessman who made the complaint against her is also the subject of a lawsuit where she is claiming defamation among other things. It is unclear the current status of that initial complaint against her that was being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
According to the release, the officer’s behaviour significantly breached the Civil Service Code of Conduct as set out in section 5(2)(a)(b)(e) and (f) of the Public Service Management Law, as read with the Customs Department’s Workplace Rules, the Collector said.
Several other customs officers remain suspended as they face pending criminal charges.
