OPPOSITION ISSUES STATEMENT ON PASSING OF KIRKLAND NIXON
It is with great sadness that the Opposition joins in mourning the passing of Kirkland Nixon, a patriot who played such pivotal roles on a national scale in so many facets of Caymanian life.
He will be particularly remembered not only for his inspirational leadership abilities but for his human warmth, with his remarkable capacity to bring out the best in people in times of crisis and loss. His pioneering work in such roles as chairman of the National Hurricane Committee and as Chief Fire Officer over many years of rigorous development and his commitment to service as a tireless participant in community affairs have already claimed their place in the story of these islands.
His legacy is a unique embodiment of Albert Einstein’s words of wisdom: “Try not to be a man of success, but rather to be a man of value.” In thus pursuing success on his own terms, and in carving out a life based on values to which we should all aspire, he fiercely and fearlessly stepped forward in the pursuit of progress.
On behalf of all who call these islands home, we extend our condolences to Kirkie’s family at this difficult time. The Cayman Islands celebrate with you the extraordinary life of this remarkable family man, exemplary civil servant, and contributor to life on the national stage who sought so persistently to make life better for us all.
He has made us proud to call ourselves Caymanians.
