(CMR) Premier of Bermuda David Burt announced Sunday night that his office would be seeking support staff from other jurisdictions to help Bermuda’s overstretched health service.
“Right now, our principal concern is the healthcare system and especially the hospital…The scale of this outbreak has stretched their resources, and the key to allowing them to continue to provide the standard of care necessary for the sick is to provide needed relief for the staff.” the premier said in a statement.
“My office is coordinating an effort to source relief staff from other jurisdictions to ease the demands on our nursing staff in particular.
“This journey will be long for some patients battling the coronavirus, and not only must we be concerned about their care, but the hospital must also be able to attend to the acute care needs of others,” Burt continued.
Bermuda has had a significant increase in coronavirus cases over the last few weeks. The situation has become so bad that the public transport system has been affected with over 30 drivers out sick.
Bus services ground to a halt late on Friday as drivers took industrial action following all-day discussions between drivers and management over safety protocols. The drivers stayed off the job again on Monday.
Four people have died this weekend from the virus, bringing the death toll from coronavirus to 42, while the number of active cases of the virus has soared to 1,427.
On Monday the CDC issued a Level 4 warning for Bermuda, advising citizens against traveling to the country.
