(CMR) Bermuda has reimplemented a nightly curfew due to a spike in COVID-19 cases possibly linked to the coronavirus's UK strain.
The curfew, which will run from midnight to 5 am, goes into effect on Wednesday. Boat curfew will remain at 8 pm.
“Recently, Bermuda has gone from 9 active COVID-19 cases, where 8 of the 9 are imported cases, to 17 active cases where 8 are imported, 8 are local transmission, and 1 is under investigation. This happened in just two weeks,” Kim Wilson, Health Minister, said.
The spike in cases is said to be linked to a party where a person in quarantine had attended.
“Despite our hard work and our progress to date, I am disappointed that we have recently seen a rise in active cases due to what seems to be a single event. This increase is further evidence that COVID-19 is still a threat and can easily spread if persons do not follow the regulations that the Government has implemented to manage the impact of the coronavirus in our country,” Premier David Burt said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Due to the re-imposition of the curfew, all businesses will be required to close at 11 pm.
The maximum number of persons for group gatherings in a public or private setting will remain at 25
Outdoor funerals can be attended by up to 50 persons, while Indoor funerals can hold up to 25% of the maximum capacity for the venue in which they are held.
·Table size in restaurants, bars, and nightclubs remains at ten persons
Bar service is not permitted at liquor licensed establishments. Table service only.
The UK and South Africa variants have been identified in Bermuda, with the South Africa variant imported on January 13 via Miami.
On Tuesday, Bermuda had 17 active cases. Since March 2020, Bermuda has recorded 713 total confirmed cases of COVID-19; out of those, 684 persons have recovered, and 12 persons have died.
As of Tuesday, 21,387 vaccines have been administered, with 21% of the population receiving one dose and 11% two doses.
