(CMR)As Barbados works to bring a surge in COVID-19 cases under control, the island has recorded two dengue-related deaths.
An eight-year-old child with a serious underlying health condition was one of the two persons suspected of dying due to dengue.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kenneth George said tests were being conducted for confirmation.
The other person's age or gender has not been revealed; however, Dr. George said that person did not have a pre-existing condition.
Meantime, he said reports from December did not indicate a rise in dengue cases in Barbados.
“Dengue surveillance is being given special attention, but I can report to you as we speak that the numbers are within the normal threshold that is expected around this time in previous years,” Dr. George added.
He said mapping of areas of concern was done so a targeted approach can be taken with fogging.
Minister of Health and Wellness Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic said the Government was sparing no effort to tackle the mosquito population.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
