(CMR) A bit of a “cold snap” has Cayman's feeling the Christmas breeze this week just in time for our holiday celebrations!
Christmas Breeze is a term used to describe the cooler weather often felt in the Cayman Islands during the months of December and January. Many households are able to turn off the air conditioning and open up the windows for an extra dose of crispy air. The weather also allows Caymanians to pull out boots, hoodies and for some even a turtleneck!
Yesterday, the temperature rose only to the high 70s during the day and dipped to the low 70s in the evening. The “fresh northerly winds” are being caused by a high-pressure system over the western Gulf of Mexico. A number of people took to social media to share how much they enjoyed the change and even shared the temperature readings from their smart phones:
Florida is also experiencing its coldest weather of the season so far with the possibility of wind chills in the upper 30s and lower 40s last night. A cold weather advisory was issued for homeless residents to seek shelter indoors.
Today's temperatures are expected to be in the lower 70s for Floridians and increasing to the mid to upper 70s Friday and Saturday.
Cayman can also expect partly cloudy skies with cloudy spells and a 30% chance of late night showers. Temperatures will fall to the low 70’s °F. Winds will be northeast at 10 to 15 knots with higher gusts. Seas will be moderate with heights of 3 to 5 feet.
Residents should be reminded that cooler temperatures could lead to falling iguanas out of trees!
