(CMR) The badge worn by Jamaica's Governor-General is to be redesigned following a petition posted online which labeled the emblem as racist.
The badge that has been worn by Governor Generals in Jamaica since independence depicts St Michael standing on the neck of a chained black man.
The Change.org petition started by Tracy Reeve calls for the image on the badge- one of Britain’s highest honours — to be removed as she likened it to the May 25 event in which African American George Floyd was killed by a white police officer in Minnesota, USA.
“This is a highly offensive image, it is also reminiscent of the recent murder of George Floyd by the white policeman in the same manner presented here in this medal,” writes Reeve.
The image has been a hot topic on Twitter since the recent protest in the United States with many Jamaicans expressing disbelief that such an image even exists.
CMR understands that plans are underway to review the badge, but there has to date been no official confirmation as to when the image will be replaced.
