(CMR) On Easter Sunday, thieves stole up to $30 million from a money storage facility in the San Fernando Valley, marking one of Los Angeles‘s largest-ever cash heists.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Police Department said the burglary occurred at an undisclosed facility in Sylmar.
The facility was housing cash from businesses in the area, and law enforcement officials informed the Times that only a select few individuals would have been aware of this arrangement.
The FBI Los Angeles office told CNN Thursday that they are investigating “a large theft” in the San Fernando Valley and are working jointly with the LAPD. However, citing an ongoing investigation, the LAPD would not share any other details. The LAPD referred all comments to the FBI.
Burglars gained access to the building and entered the vault without setting off the alarms, a source said. Based on their ability to evade detection, investigators believe the group is sophisticated. One area of focus for the investigation is whether the group had inside knowledge of the facility, said the source, who added that the heist was discovered on Monday.
The facility was operated by private security firm GardaWorld, CNN reported.
