(CMR) Police in the Bahamas arrested two people on sexual assault charges last week after two American women on a Carnival cruise were reportedly drugged and raped while on a beach there.
Amber Shearer and Dongayla Dobson said they were relaxing on a Grand Bahama beach when a resort employee allegedly gave them drinks spiked with a cocktail of drugs, including benzodiazepines.
Quick actions of officers in Grand Bahama resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old man from Eight Mile Rock and a 40-year-old man from South Bahamia after they allegedly sexually assaulted the women on Sunday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force reported.
Reports from the department are that the attacks took place shortly after noon on Sunday while the women visited a beach in Central Grand Bahama.
“They were given drinks – a coconut and pineapple drink − spiked with a series of drugs and narcotics. They became inebriated and were both taken away and raped,” the women's attorney, Nicholas Gerson, told USA TODAY.
At the time of the reported attacks, Gerson said his clients were unaware of the recent travel warning and “not aware of any warnings given by Carnival.” The US recently issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas, warning that violent crimes, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas.
