(CMR) An individual at HMP Northward made contact with CMR on Thursday regarding inmate Bernard Rockett, who was allegedly beaten by prison guards and is calling for his lawyer to check on his wellbeing.
CMR has been told that Rockett is currently awaiting his trial at the end of January on marijuana-related charges. A November court list shows that he was charged with Criminal trespass, Possession of Ganja with intent to supply and Breach of Probation Order.
According to the person who wishes to remain anonymous, Rockett was severely beaten while handcuffed in his cell by seven guards. He was reportedly denied medical treatment and is being held in solitary and only allowed out for one hour a day.
Allegations are that Rockett asked for extra food for dinner when he was taken back to his cell; however, he resisted entering his cell and was handcuffed and beaten.
A concerned family member said they want his lawyer to visit to check on him and to take photos of his injuries as well as to subpoena CCTV footage in order to file a complaint; however, efforts to reach his lawyer have been futile.
“They are supposed to be “reforming,” but they’re breaking his spirit. This is what turns people into cold-hard criminals,” the family member said.
