(CMR) There has been a rumor in circulation for the past two days that a man was bitten by a shark. CMR investigators have been able to confirm the authenticity and context of the rumor.
TRUE:
This rumor is mostly true, but apparently, some erroneous information has been circulating in relation to it, including a photo of a man who was shot in his hand at Vine and Tap last weekend. This photo is not related to the shark incident at all.
CMR can confirm that a 37-year-old Caymanian man was out fishing with another companion Thursday evening in North Side. At some point, he entered the water with bait on his hand when he was approached from behind by a black tip shark that bit him on his wrist/hand. He was subsequently transported to Health City Cayman Islands in East End and was reportedly having surgery late in the evening and is now at home recovering.
Shark bite incidents in the Cayman Islands are extremely rare, and in most cases, humans pose more of a danger to sharks than the other way around.
Unfortunately, the rumor was being perpetrated by the WhatsApp group 3C#CaringCaymanianCulture operated by SherryAnn Smith-Bodden.
