(CMR) Several Cuban migrants are feared dead after a boat carrying ten migrants was destroyed at sea and its occupants reportedly attacked by sharks.
The Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control Service (CBC) confirmed that one (1) male migrant was found in Spot Bay, Cayman Brac, at approximately 7:00 a.m. today, Saturday, 30 September.
The migrant claimed that he was on a vessel with nine (9) other migrants, and all except him perished at sea when they tried to swim to Cayman Brac.
However, at approximately 12 noon today, a second male migrant was rescued by a private vessel from the waters off Cayman Brac, and he is now at the Faith Hospital receiving medical treatment.
A CMR source revealed that a couple out fishing saw the migrant floating on a piece of styrofoam. The migrant told them he was part of a group of 10 people who were shipwrecked and attacked by sharks.
CBC is currently investigating this incident and will process the migrants in accordance with established CBC protocols. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS), the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG), and the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) are supporting CBC with this incident.
Residents in Cayman Brac are asked to share any information or tips they may have by calling the CBC toll-free hotline 1 (800) 534 2546.
This is the second group of migrants to arrive in Cayman Brac since last week. Last week, a group of four migrants arrived in Cayman Brac.
