(CMR) Caymanians in Florida are among thousands preparing for the arrival of Tropical Storm Idalia, which is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane.
Kevin Watler, Regional Public Information Office coordinator in Florida, has been helping fellow Caymanianas stay abreast of the latest developments through a Whats App group created for Caymanians in Florida.
At least one person in the group has opened their home to fellow Caymanians who may need to move further inland as storm surges are expected.
“Time is running out for you to finalize your plans, so complete your prep by tomorrow morning. We will start to experience impacts tomorrow,” Watler advised.
Several counties are now under a State of Emergency, with schools and other institutions closed in preparation for the storm.
The Tampa International Airport will close on Tuesday by 7 a.m. to allow the airport and its partners to prepare the airfield and terminals, including the securing of jet bridges, ground equipment, and any remaining aircraft before Idalia’s expected landfall early Wednesday as a potential major hurricane.
The Airport, including the Main Terminal and Airsides, will be closed to all visitors and is not equipped to function as a shelter. The Airport anticipates reopening on Thursday morning, with damage assessments beginning after the storm passes.
