UPDATE: Jasmine McKenzie, the mother of three who was critically injured in a New York Fire, has died.
(CMR) Jasmine Mckenzie (45), a mother of three, reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries in a fire at an apartment building in Staten Island, New York, early Tuesday morning and is now on life-support.
Ironically, McKenzie, who is originally from Jamaica, is said to have just received her permanent residency on Monday after living in the Cayman Islands for a number of years.
Initial reports were that McKenzie had died; however, CMR understands that the cashier supervisor at AL Thompson is being treated at a New York hospital. AL Thompson closed early Tuesday with customers being asked to leave immediately as distraught staff were sent home after receiving this shocking news. McKenzie reportedly worked with the company for almost 10 years.
Reports are that about 60 firefighters and 12 units battled the blaze at 7:19 a.m. on the sixth floor of a seven-story building at 195 Steuben St., according to silive.com.
According to silive.com, McKenzie was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.
Windows were busted, and a New York Fire Department ladder was stretched into an apartment on the upper floor of the building as a helicopter whirled overhead. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the FDNY spokesman.
