(CMR) The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has announced the implementation of its Wheeled Bin Pilot Project along a selected route in the Prospect Community.
Residents within the selected route are invited to register to participate in the Pilot Project and receive 96-gallon capacity wheeled bins, which will be assigned to their location. The wheeled bins provided by the DEH at no cost to residents will replace those currently being used with the aim of testing the proposed new collection system.
For a period of 6 months and starting in September, the proposed new waste collection system is aimed to test the implementation of world-class standard mechanized collections from residential locations within the selected route.
The pilot is expected to impact over 400 households along the Prospect area, covering a range of housing types, geographic locations, and a diversity of communities to allow the pilot to identify any issues or concerns that may arise.
The selected route includes the following streets: Prospect Point Rd., Mahogany Way, Mangrove Ave., Siberia Ave., Tarpon Cir., Poindexter Rd., Swansong Cres., Mallard Dr., Birdhouse Cl., Evco Tours Ln., Palm Islands Cir., Oxford Ct., Whirway Cl., Ripon Ct., Dogwood St., Loch Lomond Way., Roxborough St., Windswept Dr., Reverie Rd., Amity St., Patricks Ave., North of Prospect Dr., Bay Island Ave., Bonnie View Ave., one stop on Almond Ave and another on Giape Ave.
Over the next month, DEH teams will be visiting residents within the selected route to facilitate their registration and provide information on the pilot.

DEH Director Richard Simms explained that “the current system for the collection of waste means that our collectors are required to lift the garbage bags or bins from their place of enclosure to the truck to empty them. The introduction of a wheeled bin system will reduce their risk of injuries associated with lifting while keeping it cleaner and safer also for residents”.
Simms also said that the introduction of wheeled bins in the collection of residential waste is a step closer to the ambitious plan to expand this collection system to the rest of the Cayman Islands. The results from the pilot and further consultations will be used to inform the decision for the future of waste collection in the Cayman Islands.
