(CMR) Conrad Clint Mendoza (39), who was convicted on several counts of indecent assault of a young teenage girl, was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday.
Mendoza, who shared a close relationship with the girl's family, reportedly began touching the young teenager inappropriately while playing and molested the child on several occasions over eight months in 2020.
He was touching the girl inappropriately for a while before she told anyone. She mustered the confidence to tell her friend and eventually her parents after he entered a bathroom while she was naked and touched her.
The matter was reported to the police, and he was arrested in October 2020 but was not charged until earlier this year as he denied the allegations. Mendoza admitted to one count, suggesting it was accidental, and he also claimed children did not sexually arouse him.
Justice Cheryll Richards, in sentencing Mendoza, said he had groomed the girl to get her to accept his sexual advances. She further stated that he needed a sexual offender assessment while in prison as he must take responsibility for his actions and learn self-control so he will not become a problematic sex offender.
Justice Richards made a sexual harm prevention order for five years to prevent him from being alone with children after his release from jail. However, Mendoza, a foreigner with no ties to the community, is likely to be deported on release.
