(CMR) A Jamaican man who arrived in the Cayman Islands illegally in 2020 and was found in possession of two firearms and ammunition was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Wednesday, 22 June.
Andrew Beckford was charged with two counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition following a major drug bust in 2020. He was also charged for landing without a permit and for ganja importation.
Beckford was taken into custody on 21 May 2020, after police officers spotted a canoe in the Spotts Beach area, in George Town. Several packages were located and seized by police, who searched the area. The packages contained suspected ganja and two handguns, along with live rounds of ammunition.
The guns were later identified as an Amadeo Rossi .357 Magnum revolver and a Raven Arms.25 semi-automatic pistol. He also had in his possession 61 rounds of ammunition of various calibers.
He was sentenced to 30 months for each count of gun possession and 4 months for the ammunition. The sentences are to run concurrently with time already spent in custody taken into consideration.
He was also sentenced to one month for his illegal entry into the country and 6.6 months for one count of ganja importation, and 6.6 months for supplying the drug.
