(CMR) One of the 20 passengers on a flight from the UK to Jamaica who tested positive for COVID-19 has died.
According to the Ministry of Health, the 77-year-old man, of Jamaican descent, died on Sunday after being hospitalized.
However, the health ministry said the man was not one of the four persons who tested positive for the coronavirus's new variant.
“The patient was in state isolation and remained stable until late December when he developed symptoms and was admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital. His condition further deteriorated and was listed among the critically-ill COVID-19 patients,” the ministry said in a statement.
The man was among the last passengers from the UK allowed into the island following flight restrictions imposed on the UK by Jamaica.
Jamaica imposed a ban on flights from the UK after it was announced that a new variant of COVID-19, 70% more transmissible, was identified there. However, a December 21 flight was allowed to proceed.
Passengers from the flight were placed in state quarantine and tested; 20 positive results were returned.
It was later confirmed that four of the positive cases are the new variant.
Passengers who tested negative were placed in quarantine for 14 days and have since been released.
