(CMR) History was made in Bermuda after the British Overseas Territory (BOT) first black and female governor was recently sworn into office.
Rena Lalgie was sworn into office on Monday (December 14) at a closed ceremony at Government House.
The ceremony was closed as the new governor had to quarantine with her family after arriving on the island.
Those in attendance at the event were limited, with only the Premier of Bermuda and other important figures present; the group strictly observed social distancing protocols among other measures.
“It is a privilege to have begun my service as Governor of Bermuda. My family and I look forward to settling into Bermudian life,” said Lalgie at the ceremony.
Lalgie, who was appointed in June 2020 by Queen Elizabeth II, previously served as director of the United Kingdom’s Office of Financial Sanction Implementation.
She replaces John Rankin, a Scotsman, who has left to take up a similar post in the British Virgin Islands.
