(CMR) Despite having the power to fine Skylar Mack up to CI$10,000 and two years imprisonment the court decided she would only complete 40 hours of community service instead.
Mack was in court today for breaching quarantine last weekend when she attended a public event on Sunday where several hundred people were in attendance. Mack will also pay CI$2,600 for the mandatory quarantine facility which she was moved to after the breach was detected late Sunday afternoon.
Under the provisions, she will remain quarantined for 14 days and best tested by public health at that time. After being released from quarantine she will commence her 40 hours of community service. Once completed she will be permitted to leave the island.
Her passport has been confiscated in the interim. The magistrate commented that she cannot impose a band on Mack returning to Cayman; that would be a matter for the government.
However, she did reprimand Vanjae “VJ” Ramgeet her boyfriend. Ramgeet is also now in quarantine along with six other persons who attended the event. Ramgeet also has to pay for his quarantine facility and will have to likewise complete 40 hours of community service.
The court scolded Ramgeet for failing his country and indicated he would be on house arrest. He will be fitted with an ankle monitor by order of the court for two months and must be home from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. every day during that period. She noted that he was highly irresponsible for someone who represented his country on an international platform.
He remains to be sanctioned by the CIWA for his actions at their event.
