(CMR) Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of National Security, Matthew Samuda, on Thursday (November 12 ) said that local prison inmates had already produced 98 tonnes of chicken meat.
In late October the ministry had partnered with New Port Mills Limited, a local distributor of chicken feed, to install two new broiler units at the Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centre (TFACC).
The new facility which can house up to a total of 9,000 chickens is part of efforts aimed at cutting the cost associated with feeding the inmate population, which cost the government in excess of J$13 million annually.
“Three weeks ago we unveiled our new broiler units at Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centre in partnership with Newport Mills Limited (Nutramix), following the official commissioning of the two broiler units approximately 98 tonnes of broiler meat has already produced,” said Samuda in a tweet.
“This represents approximately 40% of the total inmate consumption per annum. Many thanks to Nutramix! Most importantly inmates are learning and gaining a sense of purpose,” he added.
The poultry production programme is expected to produce near to 100,000 kilogrammes of broiler meat and represent approximately 40 per cent of total inmate consumption.
