(CMR) Jamaica is expected to introduce a mandatory $40 fee for visitors entering the country, as part of a protection for travellers in the advent of a medical crisis.
The fee is part of the “Jamaica Cares” programme being coordinated by the Global Tourism Resilience Crisis Management Centre.
The programmed covers the treatment costs, field rescue, evacuation and repatriation for medical emergencies, including COVID-19 and natural disasters.
“Jamaica Cares delivers an unmet need in the travel industry by providing primary medical coverage and medical evacuation services,” said Edmund Bartlett, minister of tourism and co-chairman of Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre.
“The traveler knows they’re protected, and they know other travelers are, too. That’s what’s needed to give confidence to travelers when they are ready to travel,” added Bartlett.
According to the Minister, Jamaica is the first in the world to offer this end-to-end health logistics coverage.
Additionally, he said that Jamaica, since reopening its border to tourists on June 15, has welcomed 150,000 visitors and has not had any case of the virus among visitors or workers.
