(CMR) A petition is making the rounds on Change.org asking the Jamaican government to consider reopening its borders to allow nationals into the country.
The Andrew Holness led administration closed the country's borders on March 25 to combat the spread of the deadly coronavirus (COVID-19).
The petition which has over 398 signatures accuses the Holness administration of using the “take one for the team” tactic, as it relates to a recent incident in which Jamaicans onboard the Marella Discovery 2 who were unable to return home despite being 12 miles south of Port Royal on April 2.
“The Jamaican Government is using the “take one for the team” tactic, sacrificing some Jamaicans while saving others,” read the petition.
“This is not your decision to make! It is more dangerous everywhere else in the world than actually being home. We just want to exercise OUR RIGHTS as Jamaicans; the right to life, the right to freedom of movement, the right to freedom from discrimination. This is the time for us to stand and fight this fight together,” added the petition.
The petition was launched by a user named “Jamaicans Citizens” on April 17 and aims to collect 500 signatures.
