(CMR) A video is circulating this morning of the MSC Armonia ripping into a dock in Roatan, Bay Island, Honduras.
The ship is part of the cruise line Mediterranean Shipping Cruises (MSC) and destroyed part of the wharf that was designed to accommodate ships of that size. Apparently at around 8:30 am Honduras time the captain was attempting to doc and caused significant structural damage to the port.
Preliminary reports are that the vessel, with 1,800 passengers, sailed at high speed off the cost of West Bay (Honduras). The cruise ship was said to be doing around 20 knots according to eyewitnesses.
The onlookers at Coxen Hole, were shocked at the sight of the ship ripping into the concrete dock. Many took amateur video footage which showed a number of persons running towards to the ship.
There are no injured persons at this time. Local authorities are accessing the damage. However, our sources have indicated that the captain dropped anchor and destroyed a large portion of the dock and the coral reef.
MSC Armonia is a cruise ship that was built in 2001 for the now defunct Festival Cruises as MS European Vision. Since 2004 the ship has been owned and operated by MSC Cruises.
We are told the ship has a capacity of 1952 passengers, 752 crew with 976 cabins.
Ironically the maximum speed is 20.1 knots. At this time the ship remains on site waiting for a full assessment of the damage and to determine if it can continue on it's itinerary.
