(CMR) Iconic Jamaican multi-millionaire businessman and hotelier mogul, Gordon Butch Stewart OJ, CD is dead it has been reported late Monday evening.
Reports are that he passed away in the United States where he had been unwell “for some time”.
Stewart was the founder, owner and chairman of Sandals Resorts, Beaches Resorts and their parent company Sandals Resorts International. He was also founder of the ATL Group and it’s subsidiaries Appliance Traders and The Jamaican Observer.
In July he spoke about the passing of Tortuga Rum Company founder, Captain Robert “Robbie” Hamaty sharing that he was “a friend to all and enemy to none.”
His hotel ownership started in 1981 when he bought the Montego Bay property. Stewart was a recipient of the Order of Jamaica and a Commander of the Order of Distinction for his contributions to the tourism and hotel sector.
The 79-year-old was born in Kingston, Jamaica and was married to Chyril Stewart. He is survived by seven children.
