Cayman Compass laying off more Hurley’s Media staff

Compass to charge for online news – paywall system to launch this month

Way before COVID hit Compass sales were on the decline with newspapers stacked high at grocery stores and gas stations across the islands

(CMR) Cayman Compass continues to lay employees off sources close to the organization have shared. The employees worked for Hurleys Media it was revealed, but it appears Compass staff are also worried about their future with the organization.

CMR understands that since the takeover of the four Hurley's Media radio stations several staff redundancies can be expected including on-air talent, administrative and sales staff. This comes 10 months after quite a few employees were laid off by the publication.

An insider shared that they also plan to remove the new Cayman Crosstalk host, Barrie Quappe after the listenership has dropped significantly since she took over the show in early January.

Online views have dropped by at least 60% on most days. This had lead to sponsors dropping from the radio platform as well.

Replacing Woody DaCosta with Quappe has not boded well with the talk show fans and many have abandoned the platform entirely leading to the company now claiming they have plans to remove Quappe. They are actively recruiting new talent for the hosting gig.

It appears that Quappe's hosting style is not being well received by many and packing the show with guests has not helped the numbers. In fact, on today's program, she hosted both Miss Cayman and a roundtable panel of two journalists from Cayman Compass. The most Facebook live views at any given time were only 10 people.

There is a growing concern for the remaining employees at both the Compass and Hurleys Media who have already experienced several redundancies and an uncertain future. Sources have shared that the recently introduced paywall has not been as successful as they anticipated and reporters are being pressured to produce more content with fewer resources.

The most high profile firing so far has been that of Woody DaCosta. It appears that the new owners underestimated the impact of his termination; which they had former owner Randy Merren do as a final act before his departure.

In typical Compass fashion, the management has not said anything to employees about their future.
