(CMR) Former Jamaican footballer Luton Shelton passed away at a hospital in Jamaica on Friday.
Shelton was reportedly found unresponsive at home and was rushed to Andrews Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The former Sheffield United forward was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2018, a year after his final appearance for the Harbour View club, based in Kingston.
Shelton (35) had an international career that spanned a decade. He represented Jamaica 75 times, scoring 35 goals.
He also played for local and overseas football clubs, including Harbour View, Helsingborgs IF, Sheffield United, Vålerenga, Karabükspor, and Volga Nizhny Novgorod.
Coach of Jamaica's national men's football Theodore Whitmore said the outstanding player's passing saddened the football fraternity.
Shelton died just under two years after his father, Luton Shelton Senior, collapsed at home and died on May 16, 2019.
ALS causes the motor neurons inside the spinal cord to die and, over time, causes muscles to degenerate progressively, eliminating the ability to move, speak, swallow and, eventually, breathe.
