(CMR) 23-year-old Bodden Town resident, Jon-Mikol Rankin, appeared in court yesterday after a weekend incident at Da Station Bar and Lounge early Saturday morning facing several charges.
He appeared in Summary Court and has been charged with wounding, assault causing actual bodily harm, causing harassment, alarm and distress and drunk and disorderly conduct. Reports are that two women were injured during the incident and one is still at the hospital in stable condition.
The court heard that the incident occurred after closing shortly after 2:00 am as initial CMR reports indicated. At closing he attempted to gain entry to the bar but the entrance was locked. He then smashed the front door glass and went in and began smashing bottles at the bar.
Several women were there celebrating a friend's birthday and he attacked one with a chair causing injury to her eye which required three stitches.
Another woman attempted to calm him down. However, he then pushed her into the counter and she was unable to move her legs because of recent back surgery. This is the woman that remains in the hospital because she is awaiting an MRI – which her insurance is not covering.
In the below video he can be seen throwing objects and cursing at a woman and then apparently chasing after her at some point as well. He states that he has nothing to lose. At one point he can be heard saying
“when I say opening the F**** door you open it.”
and later states that he doesn't want to kill anyone tonight. Women can then be heard crying and saying “that's Randy's son” and another on states she can't move. They can be heard conversing in Spanish “let's get out.” The other person responds “I cannot”.
It is understood that Rankin, who's the son of one of the owners, wanted access to the bar and was denied entry. For some reason he then proceeded to damage the premises and assault the above mentioned women. Several videos have circulated showing him in the act as well as the aftermath of the destruction.
Police eventually attended the scene and restrained Rankin at which time it's reported that he was still attempting to charge at another woman in the bar.
He told officers he had entered the bar because he had a dispute with someone and somebody threw a bottle at him. He said he was acting in self-defense. Eyewitnesses say he was heavily intoxicated.
His father has expressed no desire to pursue a complaint for the $800 in damages caused to the premises. He received bail with a curfew to accommodate his work schedule, wearing of an electronic monitor and no consumption of alcohol and a restriction from entering any liquor-license premises except except for work purposes.
Rankin is currently employed at the Cayman Islands Fire Service and we understand his status with that government agency is under review.
