(CMR) The police have warned the public to be aware of a letter scam by mail informing persons of a large inheritance from a distant relative.
The RCIPS said the Financial Crime Investigation Unit (FCIU) recently received reports that several business owners had received letters in the mail informing them that they were the recipients of a sizeable inheritance from a distant relative.
The letters provided details on how to receive the allocated funds and how the funds would be distributed.
“This letter is the first stage of a scam and anyone receiving the letter is encouraged not to respond.” the RCIPS FCIU said in a release.
The police asked the public to be vigilant when carrying out business, and that persons do not share personal and banking information, whether through traditional mail, emails, or over the phone.
Anyone who receives these or similar letters or who has information on these letters' origin is encouraged to call the RCIPS FCIU at 949-8797 or email [email protected].
Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via their Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or via their website.
