(CMR) Things are beginning to look up for countries in the English-speaking Caribbean, as most have recorded very few new cases of COVID-19; while others have seen a steep decline in the daily coronavirus numbers.
What’s more is that the number of countries in the region with no active cases of the virus has continued to increase.
According to University professor Dr. Clive Landis, COVID-19 has been successfully contained in the English-speaking Caribbean and Haiti, however he notes danger still looms.
Landis made the revelation while speaking as a guest on the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) podcast, “COVID-19: The Unwelcome Visitor”.
“The bottom line for the whole Caribbean is that the Caribbean has avoided the kind of outbreak, the kind of epidemic that we’ve seen in many European countries…and north America. We’ve avoided that,” said Landis
“When you look at the growth trajectories, they are basically flat [in virtually all the countries],” he added.
Despite the favourable figures the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in its latest Situation report published on May 6, 2020 said the risk of further importation of cases to the rest of the Caribbean remains very high.
CARPHA also shared that it had met with the University of the West Indies (UWI), and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and shared recommendations aimed at the easing of coronavirus restrictions in member states at a recent virtual CARICOM meeting.
CMR is today sharing a snapshot of the COVID-19 situation in countries in the English speaking.
