(CMR) An enormous forest fire started earlier this evening in a section of La Montañita in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa – Canta Gallo, Francisco Morazan. Residents are extremely concerned because the fire is said to be close to both residential homes and the country's largest Catholic Church – Basílica de Suyapa.
The fire is in the hilly southwest section of the country, 30 km southwest of the capital Tegucigalpa.
Flames are said to be meters high with some 40 homes being in direct danger. Residents in the Los Chorros village are most at risk with some residents attempting to fight the fire themselves. However, the Honduran fire department is said to be trying to get the flames under control.
At the church, an 18th-century cedar wood statue called Our Lady of Suyapa said to have miraculous powers is stored. On September 9, 2015, Pope Francis established the church as a Minor Basilica.
