(CMR) Florida now has 520 confirmed cases of COVID-19 disease as of today with one of it's first confirmed cases confirming a travel history to the Cayman Islands. The 65-year-old Broward resident was confirmed case number twenty on March 7, 2020.
Of the 520 confirmed cases, 474 are Floridians.
An epidemiological investigation by public health officials in the State of Florida found the individual got COVID-19 from a confirmed travel-linked case. He had traveled to the Cayman Islands within the last 14-days before the confirmation on the 7th. Whilst this does not indicate that he necessarily contracted the virus here it does confirm that the Broward resident had a travel history to the Cayman Islands.
The virus knows as SARS-CoV-2 that causes Covid-19 has infected more than 222,000 people since its emergence.
Speaking to overseas professionals they did indicate that one could speculate about a number of possibilities including that he may have been here and already infected by it; potentially spreading the virus to others on islands. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the virus is most often spread by person to person contact when people are in close contact with each other. Close contact is defined as less than 6 feet. Respiratory droplets are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Scientists are still figuring out all the significant ways in which the SARS-COV-2 is transmitted with it being able to linger in the air for some times under certain conditions.
